With its fantastic west-coast beaches, beautiful viewpoints and uninterrupted views across the Andaman Sea, Phuket has some pretty spectacular sunsets. The green season is probably the best time to see really stunning skies at dusk, with clouds being up-lit by the last light of the day, but you have to be lucky to get the right conditions. During the high season, you get a wonderful show from the balcony of any Phuket beach resort along the west coast on absolutely every evening.
While you can literally walk onto the sand of Karon, Kata, Patong, Kamala, Mai Khao, Surin, Bangtao or the other west-facing beaches of Phuket and watch the sunset, there are some really outstanding places to enjoy the view from. The following are some of the best.
Phuket’s most southerly point, the rocky cape is very popular at sunset, when the tall palm trees and windswept grasses glow orange in the dying light. The view to the west features Nai Harn Beach to your right and the tiny Kaeo Islands to the left. The only downside is that it is quite a long drive from most Phuket beach resorts to get there and back.
Why exactly this place is called Karon Viewpoint when it is just south of Kata Noi Beach is a mystery, but possibly a quirk of local boundaries and authorities. Regardless, it does offer an excellent but slightly odd sunset view. It looks out to the north, across Kata Noi, Kata Yai and Karon beaches. The view to the west is actually mostly obscured by trees, but the way the landscape glows in the dying light makes it still a must-see.
There are some excellent restaurants near to Karon Viewpoint which do offer westerly views, including Sabai Corner and Heaven Restaurant & Bar. Both are found along the winding road alongside the viewpoint and offer good meals and sundowners to go with the view.
As with the cape, Big Buddha is quite a long way from most Phuket beach resorts. Atop the Nakkerd Hills, which run down the spine of the island, the 45m statue is coated in white jade marble, which really gleams in the final rays of the day’s sunlight. The view across the western side of Phuket is exceptional from this high viewpoint, but the long, steep, winding road back down the hill is a little tricky in the dark.
Thavorn Palm Beach Resort
Located right by Karon Beach, Thavorn Palm Beach Resort is one of the best Phuket beach resorts for enjoying the sunset from. You can watch it from the open-fronted Ciao Bistro with one of the finest pizzas in Karon or see the sunbeams glimmer through the resort’s many palm trees from your balcony. The best view is from the Old Siam Restaurant, which is up on a raised terrace overlooking the beach, with outstanding Royal Thai cuisine to complete the romantic experience.
